Since the 19th century, coal regions across Europe have generated large waste deposits, commonly known as spoil heaps, which consist of mining waste. These heaps were an integral part of deep coal mining operations and still contain a significant amount (8% or more) of coal material. The oldest, unconsolidated, and technically untreated spoil heaps remain highly susceptible to spontaneous combustion, posing serious environmental risks. Despite this, these old spoil heaps have become a common part of the landscape, and few people recognize the hidden danger associated with the disturbance of their protective covering layers.
