"Everything around us that did not grow
naturally
or flow out of the earth
had to be mined."

THE WORLD NEEDS
RAW MATERIALS

Department of Mining Engineering and Safety

If we want light, heat, and buildings, mining is unavoidable. If we want fast transportation, we must drive tunnels. If we need water, we drill wells. And if we want to keep pace with the modern world, we must be able to design, manage, and model processes related to the extraction, processing, and transport of mineral resources. That is why skilled professionals who know how to do it are essential.

At the same time, we understand that mining must go hand in hand with a responsible approach to the environment. During your studies, you will learn how to reclaim affected areas and effectively mitigate the impacts of mining activities.

By studying with us, you will gain comprehensive knowledge of surface and underground mining, raw material processing, transport and storage, as well as land restoration. This will make you a sought-after specialist with broad career opportunities – in the raw materials, construction, and energy industries, in processing sectors, occupational safety, and public administration.

The Department of Mining Engineering and Safety continues the long tradition of mining education at VSB–Technical University of Ostrava since its foundation. Today, it provides teaching and research in key areas of modern mining: deposit extraction, remediation and reclamation, mine ventilation, blasting operations, geomechanics, mineral processing and recycling, occupational safety, process modelling, and advanced technologies including bulk solids mechanics and numerical modelling using DEM and CFD methods.

The department offers accredited study programmes: Mining of Mineral Resources and Process Engineering in Raw Materials.
