From Cameroon to Ostrava: "VSB–TUO became my second home"

30. 6. 2026 News
Henry successfully graduated from the English-ta ught Applied Geology programme at VSB–TUO and earned his Master's degree in June.

In this interview, he shares his journey to Czechia, his first impressions of Ostrava, the cultural shock he experienced after arriving, and the experiences that made VSB–TUO his second home.

  • Congratulations on your graduation! Could you tell us about your journey to VSB–TUO? Why did you decide to study in Czechia and why did you choose VSB–TUO?

After completing my Master's degree in Cameroon, I started looking for opportunities to study abroad. Although I first considered countries such as Germany, Canada, and the United States, I eventually chose Czechia because of its affordable living costs and the opportunity to study Applied Geology in English.

A friend who had previously studied at VSB–TUO recommended the university to me. The programme matched my academic background and interests, and I was impressed by the accessible admission process. Looking back, choosing VSB–TUO was one of the best decisions I have made.

  •  What were your first impressions of Ostrava and your first weeks at VSB–TUO?

My first impression was that people seemed very busy and reserved compared to Cameroon, where life is generally more relaxed and social. At first, the cultural difference was quite striking, but over time I came to appreciate people's respect for personal space and independence.

My first weeks at VSB–TUO were both exciting and challenging. The campus was much bigger than I expected, and I often got lost while trying to find my classrooms. However, after a short time I found my way around and quickly felt comfortable at the university.

  • Was studying at VSB–TUO your first international experience? What was the biggest cultural difference you experienced?

Yes, it was my first experience living and studying abroad. Before coming to Czechia, I had never travelled outside Africa.

The biggest cultural difference was the strong sense of individualism. In Cameroon, people are generally very open and community-oriented, while in Czechia people tend to value privacy and personal space much more. Although it took some time to adjust, I learned to appreciate these differences and gained a broader understanding of different cultures.

  • Why did you decide to study Applied Geology?

Cameroon is rich in mineral resources, oil, and gas, which inspired my interest in geology from an early age. I wanted to study a field that would allow me to contribute to the sustainable development of my country.

Studying Applied Geology at VSB–TUO strengthened my passion for the discipline and gave me valuable practical experience through laboratory work and field activities. It confirmed that I had chosen the right career path.

  • How would you compare the education systems in Cameroon and Czechia?

One of the biggest differences is the emphasis on practical training. At VSB–TUO, students benefit from modern laboratories, fieldwork, and close cooperation with lecturers, which makes learning much more interactive and effective.

I also appreciated the teaching approach, which encourages independent thinking while providing excellent support whenever students need guidance. This combination helped me grow both academically and personally.

  • What are your plans for the future?

My long-term goal is to pursue a PhD in Environmental Geology. Before that, I would like to gain practical experience in the geological or environmental sector.

In the future, I hope to return to Cameroon and use the knowledge and skills I gained in Czechia to contribute to geological research, sustainable resource management, and the education of future generations.

  • What will you miss the most about VSB–TUO?

Without hesitation, I would say the people. My lecturers were always approachable, supportive, and willing to help whenever I faced challenges. Thanks to them, I never felt like a stranger, even though I was far from home.

I will also miss the friendships I built during my studies and the peaceful atmosphere of Ostrava. VSB–TUO became my second home, and I will always be grateful for everything I experienced here.

  • What advice would you give to prospective international students who are considering studying at VSB–TUO?

Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Studying abroad is not only about earning a degree—it is also about personal growth, meeting people from different cultures, and gaining experiences that will stay with you for life.

VSB–TUO offers excellent education, modern facilities, and lecturers who genuinely care about their students. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone considering studying in Czechia.

Thank you for the interview, henry. we wish you all the best for the future.
