Majority of research works fall within the broader definition of the term Geological Engineering. The Department has a unique position within the Czech Republic with its focus on basic and applied geology. The scientific activity of the department is diverse in its structure.
Research at the department is focused on:
- basic research focused on mineralogy, petrography, paleontology
- hydrochemistry and hydrogeology
- study of geological and deposit conditions in the Czech Republic and abroad
- geohazard evaluation
- development of research and exploration methodologies in economic geology, engineering geology and hydrogeology
- the role of geofactors and anthropogenic impacts in the environment
- raw materials, their resources and utilization
- modeling of geological objects
