About study programme
The doctoral degree programme Environmental Protection in Industry is a modern interdisciplinary programme based on broad technical and scientific fundamentals. The programme is prospectively focused on the industrial environment, especially on the impact of mining and industrial technologies on the environment. Appropriate methods of air, water, and soil protection in the industrial environment and the environment of old mining loads can be predicted using knowledge of relevant legislation, organization and management of the environment, assessment of anthropogenic effects on the environment, modern methods of monitoring and evaluation of its condition, including the methods of evaluating the current state of the biota. It is related to the issues of applying modern methods in the field of waste management and the possibility of applying biotechnological processes in modern mining and industrial production. The programme also focuses on the introduction of clean technologies and the application of modern technologies in the remediation and revitalization of the environment affected by the mining and other industrial activities.
Due to their interdisciplinary technical education, graduates of the doctoral degree programme can find a wide range of employment in the labour market. The degree programme will prepare highly knowledgeable creative experts with the possibility of employment in the field of scientific research and development, as well as in state administration and industry.
Graduate's employment
Due to their interdisciplinary technical education, graduates of the doctoral degree programme can find a wide range of employment in the labour market. The degree programme will prepare highly erudite creative experts with the possibility of employment in science, research and development, and state administration and industry.
Typical job positions include technical specialist for the environment, environmental protection manager, worker in companies that deal with preventive approaches in the field of environmental protection (EIA, LCA, audits), business ecologist, ecologist specialist in the field of mining and processing of minerals and raw materials, technician specialist of waste management, technician specialist for air protection, technician specialist for water protection; independent researcher in research institutions, head of a research group, university lecturer, officer in the field of environmental protection in state and municipal institutions.
Study aims
The aim of the doctoral degree programme is the education of specialized experts with interdisciplinary knowledge of technical and natural sciences with an emphasis on practical experience and skills necessary for quality analysis of the state of the environment. Graduates will be prepared to perform independent research work combining theory and experiment involving stages from obtaining data sets from the environment (laboratory, field) to their professional analysis and interpretation. Graduates will demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of concepts and methods corresponding to the current state of knowledge in the field of environmental protection in the industry for their application in basic or applied research, research institutes, universities and other workplaces in the field of environmental protection affected by the mining and other industrial activities.
Graduate's knowledge
Graduates of the doctoral degree programme Environmental Protection in Industry will acquire theoretical expertise in appropriately selected study subjects, whose offer covers professional subjects in the field of environmental impact assessment of mining and industrial technologies, legislation, environmental organization and management, environmental assessment of anthropogenic influences on the environment, geochemistry and environmental monitoring, air protection technology, mine water treatment and utilization, industrial ecology, geobotany and geomicrobiology, engineering geology, regeneration and reclamation of the post-industrial landscape, waste management, remediation technologies, industrial water treatment, and nanomaterial risks for the environment. These courses are supplemented by technical courses that will enable students to expand their knowledge in the field of methods of instrumental analysis, mathematical analysis of obtained experimental data, in the field of evaluation of measurements of physical quantities and geovisualization of data.
Systematic theoretical knowledge forms the basis needed to achieve the goals of the dissertation in the selected area of focus. This knowledge can be supplemented by specific practical skills and experience from internships at foreign universities as well as from industrial practice and from research and development cooperation within teams solving specific scientific tasks.
Graduate's skills
Graduates are able to design appropriate research methods and procedures in the field of environmental impact assessment of mining and industrial technologies, actively use them to obtain original results, and thus contribute to the dissemination of knowledge in the given field. As for the students’ professional skills, the emphasis is placed on the development of independent creative thinking, especially in the interpretation of the results obtained in the context of the current state of professional knowledge in the given field. Professional skills also consist in the ability to master professional terminology in Czech and foreign languages, to defend and present the achieved results in a professional discussion at the international level.
Graduate's general competence
Graduates of the doctoral degree programme can independently formulate an environmental scientific problem, perform its analysis, and creatively design and implement its solution while respecting its ethical dimension. They can confront the obtained results with the current state of knowledge, clearly and convincingly defend their solutions in the discussion, and present their knowledge in the field to other scientific community members at the international level. They can use their professional knowledge, expertise and general competence in at least one foreign language. Graduates are able to work in a team, take responsibility for their decisions and teamwork and are ready to take responsibility for the social impact of the decisions made.
