Information for applicants

The study program prepares specialists for managerial and technical-economic positions at the middle and top level of management of companies dealing mainly with mining and processing of raw materials. This is conditioned by the study plan structure and the content of individual subjects. The focus is in management and technological courses. Duration of study is 2 years. The formal requirements for the admission procedure are governed by the Rules for Admission Procedure and the Conditions for Admission to the Master Study at the Faculty of Mining and Geology of the Technical University of Ostrava.

Graduate employment

Graduates find employment in management and technical-economic positions not only in mining companies, but also in companies operating in other sectors of the national economy. Graduates can also find employment in the public sector, universities and research organizations.

Goals of study

This field of study is a continuation of the same bachelor level field of study. The branch extends and deepens the acquired knowledge and skills, especially with regard to the future employment of graduates in the technical, economic and managerial positions of the middle, or top management of a company operating primarily in the mining and processing industry. Therefore, the focus is in management courses (project management, risk management, innovation management, strategic management, organization and management of raw material extraction) and technology of mining and processing of raw materials (mining, treatment and processing of minerals, mine disposal, safety systems). Attention is also paid to economic analysis, designing economic systems, trade in raw materials.

Graduate professional knowledge

Graduates have relevant knowledge in the field of management and technology of mining and processing of mineral resources, which creates the prerequisites for the performance of managerial and technical-economic functions in companies operating in the sector of mining and processing of mineral resources. Graduates know the principles of strategic management, project management, risk management, innovation management and logistics. Graduates know the principles of organization and management of mining and analysis of economic operations, which are the basis for managerial decisions. The graduates will acquire knowledge of methods and techniques of operational research. They are also familiar with the technical aspects of the production process, its automation and modern management approaches.

Graduate professional skills

The acquired knowledge during the study is the starting point for the development of graduates' professional skills. Graduates are able to analyse the economic process of the mining company, apply strategic analysis to the mining company and on the basis of them to propose suitable strategies enabling further development of the company. Graduates are also able to formulate the project assignment, assess it from a technical and economic point of view and propose a project implementation plan. Graduates are also able to identify project and company risks and then analyse them in detail so that they can formulate appropriate preventive or remedial measures. They can also apply exact decision-making methods to a given decision problem. Based on the knowledge of the technical aspects of the production process, they are able to make appropriate investment and financial decisions.

General competences of graduates

Graduates are qualified to perform managerial and technical-economic functions at the middle and top level of company management. Graduates are able to identify problem areas and formulate measures to eliminate them, while being able to assign clear and understandable tasks to their subordinates. Graduates are able to lead a professional discussion with their colleagues and subordinates, because they are familiar with the issues of mining and processing of raw materials and have the knowledge and ability to present and defend their views and attitudes. Graduates are able to work in teams, they know techniques and methods helping to create ideas and their elaboration into concrete proposals.
